non-lucrative visa or NLV TO LIVE IN SPAIN

A non-lucrative visa or NLV is usually the best solution for pensioners who wish to retire in Spain. However, it is also suitable for people looking to spend a gap year in Spain, athletes completing training and certain investors.

ThE NLV is INITIALLY granted for one year and is subject to meeting the following requirements:

  • Proof of income or savings (currently set at around £25,000 for one person and £32,000 for a couple per year)
  • A clean a criminal record
  • A health insurance policy that operates in Spain or an S1 certificate from the NHS
  • A certificate of good health issued by your GP or a different medical practitioner in the UK
  • Evidence of being retired or otherwise not working (e.g. pension statement or P45)

However, it is subject to the following limitations:

  • You may not work under a non-lucrative visa (NLV)
  • You must reside in Spain for at least 6 months per year in order to renew your visa, making you liable for taxes in Spain
  • You can only bring your spouse or dependent children to live in Spain with you

Non-lucrative visas or NLVs are mainly intended for pensioners retiring in Spain. Every year, almost 20,000 retirees move to Spain on NLVs to enjoy their retirement in the sun.
